Simultaneous Iterative Boltzmann Inversion for Coarse-Graining of Polyurea

چکیده
Polyurea is an alternating copolymer with excellent viscoelastic properties for dissipating shock and impact loads; however, a molecular-level understanding of how its chemistry relates to its performance remains elusive. While molecular dynamics simulations can in theory draw connections between molecular structure and viscoelastic properties, in practice the long relaxation times associated with polymer dynamics make such calculations prohibitively expensive. To address this issue, we have developed a coarse-grained (CG) model of polyurea in which each of the phenylmethaneaminobenzoate and tetramethylene-oxide units making up the polyurea chains are treated using individual CG beads. The parameters for the intraand intermolecular force field of the CG model have been obtained in a rigorous manner by using the iterative Boltzmann inversion approach. We have validated the CG model against densities, heat capacities, and chain conformations obtained from fully atomistic MD simulations for oligomeric polyurea chains. A time-dependent dynamic rescaling method is proposed that allows for quantitative predictions of stress relaxation beyond microsecond time scales. The CG model introduced here opens up avenues to study the molecular structure−function relationship of polyurea and polyureabased materials.

A comparative study of coarse-graining methods for polymeric fluids: Mori-Zwanzig vs. iterative Boltzmann inversion vs. stochastic parametric optimization.
We construct effective coarse-grained (CG) models for polymeric fluids by employing two coarse-graining strategies. The first one is a forward-coarse-graining procedure by the Mori-Zwanzig (MZ) projection while the other one applies a reverse-coarse-graining procedure, such as the iterative Boltzmann inversion (IBI) and the stochastic parametric optimization (SPO). More specifically, we perform...
متن کاملVersatile Object-Oriented Toolkit for Coarse-Graining Applications.
Coarse-graining is a systematic way of reducing the number of degrees of freedom representing a system of interest. Several coarse-graining techniques have so far been developed, such as iterative Boltzmann inversion, force-matching, and inverse Monte Carlo. However, there is no unified framework that implements these methods and that allows their direct comparison. We present a versatile objec...
متن کاملResolving Dynamic Properties of Polymers through Coarse-Grained Computational Studies.
Coupled length and time scales determine the dynamic behavior of polymers and underlie their unique viscoelastic properties. To resolve the long-time dynamics it is imperative to determine which time and length scales must be correctly modeled. Here we probe the degree of coarse graining required to simultaneously retain significant atomistic details and access large length and time scales. The...

IBIsCO is a parallel molecular dynamics simulation package developed specially for coarse-grained simulations with numerical potentials derived by the iterative Boltzmann inversion (IBI) method (Reith et al., J Comput Chem 2003, 24, 1624). In addition to common features of molecular dynamics programs, the techniques of dissipative particle dynamics (Groot and Warren, J Chem Phys 1997, 107, 4423...
متن کاملConditional reversible work method for molecular coarse graining applications.
Systematically coarse grained models for complex fluids usually lack chemical and thermodynamic transferability. Efforts to improve transferability require the development of effective potentials with unequivocal physical significance. In this paper, we introduce conditional reversible work (CRW) potentials that describe nonbonded interactions in coarse grained models at the pair level. The met...
